Energy is at the very heart of countries’ sustainable development, and is of crucial importance for the fight against poverty and for development. Energy management and renewable energy development are central to the fight against climate change and the preservation of natural resources. By generating employment and sustainable growth, this transition constitutes a genuine source of economic performance for governments, local authorities and companies.

Development of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE)

 • Assisting partner countries with the integration of RE and EE into their public policies and regulatory frameworks

 • Building the capacities of national electricity companies for incorporating RE into energy networks

 • Advising regional/international organisations specialised in energy on the development and implementation of strategies and programmes

 

Universal access to energy

 • Supporting the development of institutional frameworks and public policies promoting rural electrification, in order to achieve universal energy access

 • Providing support to national and local contractors for the dimensioning, construction and management of renewable energy infrastructure

 • Linking access to energy with economic development for the benefit of local populations

 

Promotion of green investments

Supporting public and private banks in setting up green lines of credit to finance investments oriented towards EE, RE and access to energy

Identifying sustainable and profitable projects in the EE / RE / access to energy sectors: technical and economic feasibility, project assessment and business coaching

ECLER IVOIRE

2017-2021 / €10.7m (European Union)

Within the framework of the ENERGOS II programme, ECLER IVOIRE aims to contribute to the development of renewable energies in rural areas and to promote energy efficiency in public buildings in Ivory Coast.

SUNREF Tunisia

2020-2023 / €2.2m (Agence française de développement / European Union)

SUNREF is the green finance label of Agence Française de Développement (AFD). It facilitates access to sustainable energy and the implementation of protection measures for the environment, ensures the development of a low-carbon economy and contributes to mitigating the causes of climate change. To address the scale of energy needs and environmental issues in Tunisia, SUNREF aims to develop investments by Tunisian companies in energy management and pollution control.

Rethinking Plastics

2019-2022 / €9.9m (European Union / BMZ)

The “Rethinking Plastics – Circular economy solutions to marine litter” project is cofinanced by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and is jointly implemented by GIZ and Expertise France. It aims to support the transition towards a more circular economy and the reduction of plastic and marine litter in seven East and Southeast Asian countries via capacity building actions, exchanges of good practices and the financing of pilot projects.

ReSEMBiD

2018-2022 / €36.94m (European Union)

The ReSEMBiD programme aims to support the national sustainable human development efforts of Caribbean OCTs. Its specific objectives include:

1. Increasing the Energy Efficiency of infrastructure with high impact on energy consumption;

2. Improving protection and sustainable management of the OCTs’ Marine Biodiversity;

3. Increasing the Resilience of Caribbean OCTs to adapt to extreme and recurrent natural events.
