The 25 million € will be implemented through the EUROCLIMA+ Programme, the flagship programme of the European Union in Latin America for environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change in 18 Latin American countries. These funds will be affected to actions supporting resilient food production, renewable energy and energy efficiency, and water management in the context of urban resilience.

“In the framework of the EUROCLIMA+ programme, these 25 million euros correspond to the second contracts that we signed with the French Agency for Development (AFD) and AECID for 10 million euros each. And also with Expertise France, this time with an allotment of 2 million” said Jolita Butkeviciene, Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the European Commission.

Butkeviciene added that UN Environment and the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC) have each signed a contract for 1.5 million euros.

Given that the Programme began in March 2017, this meeting will also provide an opportunity to exchange experiences on the first synergies that have been developed among the EUROCLIMA+ implementing agencies regarding their visions and future expectations.

Jolita Butkeviciene, Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the European Commission, chaired the event with AECID Director Luis Tejada. The event was held in Madrid, Spain, bringing together directors and officials of the five EU Member State agencies that are participating in the programme along with representatives of the European Commission and the EUROCLIMA+ Secretariat, among other guests.

Since 2010, based on the agreements of the V Summit of the European Union with Latin America and the Caribbean EU-LAC, the two regions have worked together to address climate change through the EUROCLIMA programme. Based on its multiple achievements and the major environmental challenges to come, the countries of the region as well as the European Union have decided to join efforts in a new regional cooperation by implementing a broader programme: EUROCLIMA+.

The EUROCLIMA+ programme is engaged in the following sectors: forests, biodiversity and ecosystems; renewable energy and energy efficiency; water management in the context of urban resilience; disaster risk reduction and management: droughts and flooding; urban mobility; resilient food production; climate governance.

EUROCLIMA+ is executed through the following implementing agencies: Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECID), French Development Agency (AFD), Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC), Expertise France, Ibero-American Foundation for Administration and Public Policies (FIAPP), German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), and UN Environment.
