With the support of the GGCA+ West Africa project, funded by the European Union and implemented by Expertise France with the political support of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and in collaboration with the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS).
What is it about?
Climate Chance, in partnership with Expertise France, offers some fifteen West African journalists the opportunity to attend the specialized training workshop "Media and Climate Change" that will take place on September 14, 2021 during the Climate Chance Africa 2021 Summit in Dakar (15-17 September).
The main objective of the training is to increase the knowledge of regional journalists in the field of reporting on climate change and those specifically related to climate resilience and adaptation.
More specifically, the day aims to:
- Improve the knowledge and skills of journalists on climate issues;
- Promote exchanges between participants on their knowledge, experiences and best practices in the field of climate change;
- Build a network of regional journalists working on climate issues in the West African region.
- To put the spotlight on ECOWAS actions in the fight against climate change.
The workshop is organized around a day and includes following topics:
- Climate change: fundamental principles and impacts at the international level and especially for the West African zone
- Status of international climate negotiations and issues at stake at COP26
- Climate policy and strategy in West Africa
- Digital tools for storytelling /climate oriented storytelling
- Method of interviewing technical experts on climate.
The training will be facilitated by Climate Chance Association and Climate Tracker.
The training will be delivered in English and French, simultaneous French <-> English translation will be provided throughout the day. The training is open to a maximum of 15 participants.
The expected outcomes of this training are:
- To improve the knowledge and skills of journalists on climate issues;
- Promote exchanges between participants on their knowledge, experiences and best practices in the field of climate change;
- Build a network of regional journalists working on climate issues in the West African region.
- Explain ECOWAS actions in the fight against climate change
- Strengthen media coverage of the Climate Chance 2021 Summit
- Strengthen the dissemination of climate change related topics in Africa.

- Journalist (web or print press, TV, radio, video)
- Working on the West African continent, in the ECOWAS-CILSS region
- Interested in covering the subject of climate change and environmental protection
- Francophone or Anglophone
Schedule
- End of the call for applications: July 20th midnight UTC+2
- Selection of participants by a selection committee: end of July / beginning of August
- Responses sent to applicants: 20 August maximum.
The selection criteria
- Geographical representativeness: 1 participant per country, except for Senegal
- References of the candidate journalist already in practice with a recognized national audience
- Motivation of the candidate to cover climate change issues
Terms and Conditions
Climate Chance guarantees the conduct and quality of the training.
Conditions of the journalist's coverage:
- Within the limit of 600€ for the transportation to Dakar;
- 5 nights in a hotel booked and taken care of directly by Climate Chance association ;
- Lunches provided and taken care of directly by Climate Chance association ;
- Perdiem of 40€/ person for the whole stay for dinners, airport/hotel transfers on arrival and then CICAD/ airport on departure.
Air transportation will be organized by the Climate Chance Association. The journalist will have to send his boarding passes to Climate Chance as soon as possible.
In case of a missed flight, he or she commits to inform Climate Chance as soon as possible, and to reimburse the non-refundable plane tickets and hotel expenses.
From the journalist, Climate Chance expects:
- His or her participation in the training; journalistic coverage of the summit on September 15, 16 and 17; publication of at least one piece of content (article, report, investigation) on the topics covered in the Climate Chance Summit at the end of the training.
- More broadly, participants carry, broadcast climate change issues in their media.

Climate Chance is organizing a training workshop for journalists in the framework of the Climate Chance Africa 2021 Summit, which will be held during the Sustainable Mobility and Climate Week (#SMDC2021), a major event for climate mobilization in Africa, which will bring together many actors fighting against climate change on the African continent (national and local governments, companies, trade unions, environmental NGOs, farmers, women's and youth organizations, researchers). This event aims, among other things, to stimulate the operational mobilization of actors in the territories who must be the gas pedals of the implementation of commitments made by States at COP21.
