Expertise France supports the Kingdom of Bahrain in its sustainable urban development policy
The aim of the contract which was concluded between Bahrain’s Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, Mr Essam Khalaf, and Expertise France, is to give support to the Directorate-General of Urban Planning (DGUP) of the Bahraini Ministry, with a view to reinforcing its key role as co-ordinator for land-use planning issues on the Island. The project will also lead to the development of a master plan on a defined area of Manama, the capital city of Bahrain.
The project, which in total is worth 8.4 million euros over two years, will be implemented by a public-private consortium led by Expertise France and bringing together partners Arep, Egis and Setec. The experts deployed on site will work with the DGUP in order to conceive a global and integrated approach to urban development. At the end of the two years, the DGUP will be in a position to take charge of the definition, management and control of urban development on the entire territory.
The implementation of this ambitious project falls within the framework of the Franco-Bahraini Initiative on urban planning, as encouraged by King Hamad bin Issa Al Khalifa and President François Hollande in August 2014.
This contract marks the beginning of sustainable institutional cooperation between the Kingdom of Bahrain and France as regards urban planning.
