Fight gender-based discrimination to reach SDGs
Since its creation in 2009, seven civil society organisations involved in the defence of LGBTI rights on all continents have been supported through grants allowing them to implement projects that benefit local LGBTI populations.
Among them, the “Family Acceptance and Diversity Initiative” project, implemented in Philippines by the GALANG organisation since May 2016, aims at contributing to the development and the consolidation of the LGBT rights movement in the country. This project also aims at promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms through an integrated approach of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, among families but also at the level of local governments.
This entails several activities set up by the NGO, including:
• Awareness workshops on gender and sexuality for families, friends and other relatives of LBT communities (lesbians, bisexual women and transgender men) living in poor urban neighbourhoods of the city of Quezon;
• Technical assistance to train family support groups and organise support meetings;
• Making and distribution of comics and brochures promoting family acceptance and diversity;
• Mobilisation of communities concerned, particularly via pride walks and celebrations related to human rights.
Expertise France thus contributes to end gender-based discrimination, a key to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) adopted in September 2015 in New York at the United Nations General Assembly.
