In late August, the "Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework - EU Support" project and the Global Youth Biodiversity Network (GYBN) held a brainstorming workshop on how to integrate intergenerational equity into biodiversity actions. The driving role of youth was strongly emphasised.

Held 27-30 August in Nairobi, Kenya, the first meeting of the Open Working Group on the Global Framework for Biodiversity Post-2020 launched the preparation process of the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Linking between intergenerational equity and biodiversity

This meeting opened the debate on intergenerational equity, an inclusive approach where all generations share the responsibility to act for the environment... to leave a healthy planet for future generations.

Prior to that, on 26 and 27 August, the "Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework - EU Support" project and GYBN organised a workshop where experts, members of civil society, senior international officials and national representatives discussed mechanisms to integrate intergenerational equity into biodiversity actions.

Biodiversity Needs You(th): the driving role of youth

Among the many topics mentioned, the importance of youth mobilisation was highlighted. Anna Braam (Youth for Climate/YOUNGO/Foundation for the rights of future generations) and Mirna Ines Fernandez Pradel (United Nations Major Group for Children and Youth) stressed the role youth played in the process that led to adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The many ideas and contributions shared during this workshop resulted in concrete proposals for integrating intergenerational equity into the Global Framework for Biodiversity Post-2020. Francis Ogwal and Basile van Havre, co-chairs of the Open Working Group and responsible for the preparation of COP 15, called on youth to enrich this initiative with their dynamism and support.

"Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework - EU Support" would like to thank the French Embassy in Nairobi for facilitating the workshop and contributing to its success.
