Peace, stability and security - Our work and impact

Nowadays, prolonged crises, violent conflicts, climate change, natural disasters, and organised crime are challenges that co-exist on an international scale and jeopardise human security, making it more difficult to achieve peace, stability and development.
As part of our work to achieve human security and lasting peace, we design and implement projects aimed at strengthening our partner countries’ public policies in the fields of risk prevention and crisis response, thereby addressing the root causes of fragility.
Our mission is to holistically tackle the risks and threats faced by vulnerable populations. Our projects aim to reduce these risks, respond to crises, and build lasting peace.
1. Global threats
Terrorism, organised crime, trafficking and even environmental crime all pose threats to the peace and security of populations. For this reason, our priority is to combat these threats through international cooperation and the exchange of technical expertise.
Our aim is to strengthen the capacities of various state bodies that prevent and combat transregional threats, with a focus on the following areas:
- The fight against trafficking, organised crime and terrorism
- Maritime and port security
- The control of dual-use goods and arms
- Cybersecurity
2. Stability and resilience
Regions in crisis, fragile regions, or those affected by conflicts are particularly vulnerable. This is why we take action to strengthen the resilience of populations in these areas. We work alongside local authorities and civil society organisations to deliver complex assistance through an integrated territorial approach. This allows us to respond to the urgent needs of populations while offering long-term solutions.
Our work covers a range of sectors, including:
- Basic services: fair and inclusive access to good-quality basic services provided to populations threatened or affected by conflicts
- Local governance: restore and strengthen the capacities of local, public and civil society stakeholders
- Economic recovery: fair and inclusive access to jobs, opportunities and livelihoods for people threatened or affected by conflict
- Social cohesion: strengthen the capacity of local stakeholders to identify, prevent and respond to risks of community tensions and to preserve and promote social cohesion

3. Strengthening defence and security forces
We operate in regions severely affected by violence, where the role of the state and its representatives is regularly called into question. We help strengthen our partners’ defence and security forces while respecting the principles of democracy and human rights. Our work is divided into four areas of action:
- Infrastructure: construct and restore infrastructure for defence and security forces
- Equipment: provide non-lethal equipment to defence and security forces
- Training: improve the professionalism and accountability of defence and security forces
- Strengthen the relationship between the armed forces and the nation: implement joint civil-military projects that benefit local populations
4. Risk prevention, mitigation and adaptation
Our agency assists with the management of natural risks (floods, earthquakes) and man-made risks of a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) nature.
Our aim is to strengthen the capacities of state and civil defence organisations in the prevention, preparedness and response. We do this in the following ways:
- Risk mapping
- Strengthening of multi-risk warning systems
- Strengthening of civil defence capacities
- Strengthening of rules and regulations
