The aim of this project is to set up a robust and unique geographical indication (GI) system, by drafting the specifications of the future Armenian brandy GI and ensuring its registration and protection.
Brandy: a flagship product of Armenian agriculture
Armenian brandy is a key product in Armenia’s agrifood industry, with a heritage that combines tradition, quality, and international recognition.
As part of Armenia’s commitments under the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA), the country is moving to a GI system for Armenian brandy. This transition requires not only regulatory harmonisation, but also a change in mindset among producers and their business practices, to ensure the success of the new GI system.
Guaranteeing the quality of Armenian brandy through a GI system
The aim of this project is to support the Armenian brandy industry by setting up a robust and unique GI system. This initiative focuses on:
- delimitation of a specific production area;
- selection of suitable grape varieties;
- introduction of precise production methods.
The project seeks to raise the standards of Armenian brandy production by drafting the specifications of the future Armenian brandy GI and ensuring its registration and protection.
Quality will be guaranteed by implementing controls and certification and by identifying laboratory infrastructure needs.

Making brandy a driver of economic growth for Armenia
Much of the project involves creating a clear brand identity and a well-thought-out marketing strategy. This will strengthen the competitive position of Armenian brandy on the national and international markets.
The project also attaches great importance to legal protection that will guarantee product authenticity, and it calls for comprehensive training for producers.
These actions are designed to strengthen local actors, contribute to economic growth, and preserve Armenia’s cultural heritage.
The support project for the creation of the “Armenian Brandy” GI is based on five complementary actions:
- Determining and registering the GI;
- Legal and regulatory framework;
- Design of the quality control system;
- Brand identity and marketing strategy;
- Producer mobilisation and capacity-building.
