Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor: strengthening sustainable connectivity between Europe and Central Asia

Central Asia holds growing strategic importance for the European Union due to its position as a land bridge between Europe and Asia, its natural resources, and its expanding economic potential. This multimodal corridor (rail, road and maritime) connects Asia to Europe via Central Asia, the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus and Turkey. It offers a strategic alternative to other northern and southern corridors, which are currently affected by unstable geopolitical situations and international sanctions

The Trans-Caspian Corridor capacity building programme is part of the EU's Global Gateway strategy, which promotes sustainable infrastructure and smart connectivity between Europe and Asia.

Through technical assistance provided to the governments of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, the programme supports concrete solutions to transform the TCTC into a more competitive, faster and more predictable trade route, while strengthening its resilience to climate and geopolitical challenges

The project works across six key levers.

1. Trade and customs facilitation: simplifying, harmonising and digitalising procedures.
2. Sustainable multimodal transport: improving connectivity and interoperability mechanisms across rail, road and maritime transport.
3. Public private partnerships (PPPs): building capacity for sustainable and inclusive infrastructure.
4. Transport market liberalisation: reforms to ensure fair competition and greater private sector participation.
5. Pricing mechanisms: transparency and fairness of transport tariffs along the corridor.
6. Optimised asset management: mobilising financing for the maintenance and modernisation of transport infrastructure.

Working closely with the governments and institutions of the five countries, the programme is helping to align regulatory frameworks with international standards and European practices. These reforms will allow businesses and logistics operators to benefit from simplified procedures, better cross border coordination and easier access to markets. By strengthening regional cooperation, the project is helping to make the TCTC a faster, cheaper and more reliable corridor, while embedding high standards for sustainable growth.
