Every year, the World Blood Donation Day is organized on June 14th by the World Health Organization (WHO). This year, Expertise France introduces the MENDAMI project (meaning “from my blood” in Arabic), that contributes to strengthen the blood transfusion system in Libya. The proper and smooth functioning of this system is necessary to guarantee the availability of high-quality blood products, while ensuring the safety of blood donors and receivers.

« The availability of blood in the different hospital medical wards is considered one of the most basic needs », explains Dr Asma Daw, paediatrician at the Tripoli Medical Center. However, Libya is facing a shortage of blood products (blood bags, etc.), due to the limited number of voluntary donors and a lack of fluidity in the blood transfusion system organization.

To address these challenges, the European Union and the French Government are financing the MENDAMI project. It has three objectives: improving the operational processes to collect and process blood, controlling the clinical prescriptions of blood and increasing the number of blood donors. Thanks to the mobilization of an international technical expertise, the Libyan Ministry of Health, jointly with Expertise France, first seeks to train the health personals in the blood banks and the pilot hospitals, and ultimately to develop communication tools to sensitize the Libyan people to voluntary non-remunerated blood donations.
