The figures speak for themselves: according to a United Nations (UN) report entitled “The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World”, between 608 and 696 million people suffered from hunger in 2025, among which 309 million people live in Africa. This equates to 7.8% of the global population. Around 1.7 billion people live in areas where crop yields fell by 10% because of human-induced land degradation.

These findings show just how vital it is to define and implement strategies for agricultural development and sustainable natural resource management, and why these are major challenges for the 21st century.
